The decay of MHD turbulence with self-gravitation

Shibo Yuan

Simulations were performed of a self-gravitating isothermal cloud with supersonic and sub-Alfvénic turbulence. We applied spatial gridding and density binning to investigate the dependence of local turbulent energy on density. Results show that the turbulent velocity decay rate varies with density in two phases: a low-density decay rate close to -0.1 km/s per Myr and a high-density decay rate close to zero. As a result of gravitational contraction, cloud turbulence does not decay spatial-uniformly within a few turn-over times as is commonly believed.
